California Firm Recalls over 800,000 Pounds of Beef Due to E.coli Concerns

Huntington Meat Packing Inc. of Montebello California is recalling approximately 864,000 pounds of beef products due to possible contamination with E.coli O157:H7.

The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) discovered the problem while conducting a Food Safety Assessment, which ultimately prompted a further investigation of establishment records.

The products were produced by the plant from January 5, 2010 to January 15, 2010 and were shipped to distribution centres, restaurants to establishments in California. There have been no reported illnesses to date associated with consumption of the products.

During a subsequent review of the establishment's records, FSIS also determined additional products produced and shipped in 2008 to be adulterated because they may have been contaminated with E.coli O157:H7. Products produced from February 19, 2008 to May 15, 2008 are also subject to recall.

Beef Recalled in Massachusetts for Possible E.coli Contamination

Adams Farm Slaughterhouse LLC of Massachusetts is recalling approximately 2500 lbs of beef products for possible E.coli O157:H7 contamination.

The recall came after the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) confirmed a positive ground beef sample for E.coli, which was collected during an epidemiological investigation. Working with the MDPH, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service determined that there is an association between the ground beef products and an illness in the state of Massachusetts.

The beef products were distributed to private owners on three separate farms in the state of Massachusetts.

Maple Leaf Recalls Wieners For Possible Listeria Contamination

Maple Leaf Foods Inc. has recalled nine wiener products because of the possible contamination with Listeria bacteria. The wieners were sold under the Hygrade, Shopsy's and Maple Leaf brand names. To date there have been no reported illnesses and the company reports that the recall was a precautionary measure only.

Dr Randall Huffman, the Chief Scientific Officer at Maple Leaf, said the company is "ultra-cautious about Listeria". The recall comes a year after a major listeriosis outbreak last summer that was traced to a Maple Leaf plant in Toronto.

Although the company has a safety net of "hold and test" quarantine procedures, they said in a statement that the effectiveness of the program depends on testing methods that the federal government has not approved and that they "urge the Canadian government to approve commercially proven in-plant rapid testing methods which are now widely in use in the United States and Europe".
